Source notes

What the sources can answer.

Use a source for the question it can answer. A licence record, a medicine label and an advert do different jobs.

For the medicine: start with FDA information.

Making medicine for a patient’s particular need is called compounding.

Preparing medicine to order may meet a need an approved product leaves unmet, but FDA has not approved the resulting medicine.

As of September 2026, these medicines went on sale without FDA checking their quality, their safety or whether they work.

Read the product name and the type of product before comparing claims about it.

For the person and pharmacy: use state records.

New York’s Education Department provides the licence search, while its Health Department holds the separate medical conduct record.

The licence search shows the person’s status; the separate Health Department search can show misconduct charges and state decisions about their work.

Use the exact name. A similar business name is a reason to ask for more detail, not to assume a match.

For visits: distinguish guidance from law.

The Federation of State Medical Boards gives medical boards guidance; it does not create a national prescribing law.

In its May 2026 guidance, choosing a drug online is not enough to support a prescription, and patients must be able to ask questions.

Use that guidance to ask how your health would be assessed. Check state rules to find out whether a service is allowed to provide care where you are.

For reports and letters: read the limits.

A problem report establishes neither that the medicine caused the problem nor how often it happens.

A warning letter from FDA sets out concerns about a business at the time of writing; it does not give a final decision.

Later contact between FDA and the business can change how FDA treats those concerns. Look for a published response or follow-up; a response alone is not proof that every problem was fixed.

An absence of published letters does not mean a business has passed review.

For cost: keep the date with the price.

Cash offers vary by product and terms, and many terms end on December 31, 2026.

Ask for a fresh quote when you are ready to compare care.
